Project summary

Our client commissioned a full 3D laser scan and digital capture of the iconic Kent Station in Cork City.

The brief

Murphy Geospatial were asked to produce an LOD400 Revit model of the entire station including platforms, public concourse, administration offices, basements, tunnels, and the incredible roof structure. The Murphy Geospatial Cork based team carried out all the required works.

Our work

The geospatial data gathered as part of this project provides the asset owners with the information needed to ensure optimisation of space, alignment with health and safety, and futureproofing through data-informed retrofitting. This data will be used during the design and construction stages on some upcoming refurbishment projects. The data will also be utilised for better and more efficient management and maintenance of this very important public building and transport hub.

The challenges

A busy public building with regular trains and passenger movements.
A fully functioning public car park, taxi rank and constant movement of people and vehicles outside of the building.
An occupied office and maintenance areas surveyed during working hours.
High level of detail required to show all structural components of the station’s roof structure.
Client required digital delivery of asset that represented reality capture onsite that is validated and verified.

Our team

2x senior surveyors and 2x assistants using the latest laser scanning and surveying technology. Our team liaised every day with station management to ensure there was no disruption to staff or members of the public during the data capture phase of the works. There was no need for any public or private areas to be closed during the works and the station continued to operate as normal.

Results

The final data set and 3D model is a brilliant digital record of an iconic and historical building. The Murphy Geospatial team who worked on this project are very proud of the results and for exceeding the clients’ expectations.
