What is Environmental Monitoring?
Environmental monitoring is the systematic process of measuring various environmental parameters such as air quality, noise levels, ground vibration, and weather conditions. Its primary goal is to monitor construction activities , ensuring compliance with environmental standards and regulations. A proactive approach controls noise levels and vibration to avoid costly project delays. This ensures the successful completion of construction, piling or demolition works.
Projects and sectors we support with environmental monitoring:
- Construction
- Demolition
- Refurbishment and retrofitting
How does Environmental Monitoring work?
Environmental Monitoring starts with deploying instruments and sensors at specified locations and intervals to measure targeted environmental factors. Our wireless data hub is connected to our monitoring software which processes the data and sends out alarms if set trigger levels are exceeded. The site manager and engineers can access the data via a web interface and review graphs, trends and trigger levels breaches. This enables the project team to manage the environmental impact to ensure adherence to regulatory standards or project-specific guidelines.
Pre-emptive alarming, instant data visualisation and full record keeping allow for timely corrective measures to be taken to mitigate adverse environmental effects and avoid problems with stakeholders and project delays. This systematic method ensures that construction activities are carried out in ways that minimise environmental impact, fostering sustainable practices and protecting the environment.
Examples of Environmental Monitoring
Air Quality Monitoring_
Measures concentrations of pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone, and carbon monoxide.
Noise Monitoring_
Tracks noise levels generated by construction activities, industrial operations, transportation, and other sources to ensure they do not exceed permissible limits.
Vibration Monitoring_
Monitors ground & structural vibration caused by activities such as demolition, pile driving, or heavy machinery to prevent damage to nearby structures and ecosystems.
Weather Monitoring_
Observes weather conditions such as wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, rainfall, and atmospheric pressure to assess their influence on environmental factors.
What are the benefits of Environmental Monitoring?
Helps prevent and mitigate adverse effects on air quality, water resources, and ecosystems, thereby conserving biodiversity and natural habitats.
Ensures adherence to environmental laws, permits, and regulations by providing data to demonstrate compliance with prescribed limits and standards such as section 61 applications and Permits to Work Read more about staying Section 61 compliant in your construction projects here.
Identifies potential environmental risks early, allowing for timely intervention and mitigation to minimise impacts on human health and the environment.
Protects public health by monitoring and controlling exposure to pollutants such as airborne particulates and noise that can affect nearby communities.
Supports sustainable development practices by integrating environmental considerations into project planning, design, and implementation.
CASE STUDY
RUSI Building Refurbishment - London, UK
Murphy Geospatial played a crucial role in the refurbishment of the iconic Grade II* listed Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) building at 61 Whitehall. This historic structure, dating back to 1896, underwent significant renovations. The refurbishment, managed by Coniston, was executed to provide modern office spaces and state-of-the-art conference facilities, bolstering RUSI’s role in defence, security, and international affairs.
Murphy Geospatial was appointed by Coniston to provide Environmental Monitoring solutions at the RUSI building during site demolition, excavation, and construction work. A vibration monitoring network was installed at specific locations to monitor the vibration and acceleration of the party walls at the Welsh Office and Banqueting House of the main RUSI building, ensuring compliance with British Standards.
Key services provided:
- Installation of 10 vibration units on every floor for baseline monitoring.
- Decommissioning of 10 vibration units
- Installation of 10 vibration units for continuous operation and accurate data logging.
- Providing real-time data reporting through a cellular network to a central database.

BAFTA Headquarters Regeneration - London, UK
The regeneration of BAFTA’s iconic London headquarters at 195 Piccadilly includes a comprehensive refurbishment and expansion of the Grade II listed building, featuring a top-floor extension to create a new members’ area. This requires raising and reintegrating two large Victorian rooflights and decorative plasterwork, restoring the original 1883 design of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.
Murphy Geospatial was appointed by Knight Harwood to provide environmental monitoring solutions during site demolition and construction works to mitigate risks. Key installations included vibration, noise, and dust monitoring units.
Key services provided:
Installation of 2 AvaTrace M80 Tri axial sensors for vibration monitoring.
Installation of 2 Aeroqual Dust Sentry Monitors for dust monitoring.
Installation of 2 SON EM2010 Sound Level Monitors for noise monitoring.
