Project summary
Demolition and replacement of a cable bridge over a canal in Birmingham, UK.
The brief
Murphy Geospatial was called upon to provide a range of services on site. These included control networks, structural monitoring, setting out and CCTV surveys.
The challenges
The site is sandwiched between the canal and river, with large culverts and other live services in the area. With large sections of the bridge to be hoisted during the demolition and new installation phases within a confined work area, efficient teamwork was crucial. All site teams and crew had regular communications to ensure that critical activities were synchronised accordingly.
Our work
Control networks were established on site at an early stage, to ensure that robust and reliable control was available throughout the work. We carried out baseline monitoring of critical infrastructure assets, followed by live monitoring whilst large elements were lifted by a crane. Setting out for piles and bolt positions ensured that the prefabricated sections fitted perfectly once lowered into position. Further monitoring was conducted following completion, including visual confined space surveys within adjacent culverts to verify asset health at completion.
Our team
The Murphy Geospatial team worked collaboratively with the client; ensuring effective communication and quick solutions are provided where needed throughout the entire project.
Results
Geospatial information was successfully delivered to the client, enabling the client to make informed decisions efficiently throughout the demolition and replacement of the cable bridge.
