Project summary
Jacobs Engineering Life science team were tasked as designer and Integrator to build a new €150m Pharmaceutical facility for Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD)
The brief
Murphy Geospatial (MGS) proposed Geospatial Management as part of the Digital Delivery Team and Quality team, working with the Jacobs Integrator Project Control team.
The challenges
- Low density high complexity build with multiple stakeholders, supply chain disciplines working and installing in close proximity at various stages of program execution under strict timelines.
- Supply chain with various levels of skills set and workflows when applying survey skills onsite and delivery of as constructed records.
- In-situ and modular build components requiring co-ordination.
- Liability and risk of installation impacting future works due to clashes, and impact on program, safety, cost and conflict.
- Client requires digital delivery of asset that represented reality onsite that is validated and verified.
Our work
- Geospatial Management promotes “right first time” culture which is closely monitored and documented facilitating informed decision making.
- Murphy Geospatial managed the risk and liability of the geospatial activity onsite. Taking control of the datums and baselines, inducting trades and supply chain on requirements as outlined in the Geospatial Management Plan (GMP) and daily reports of installation quality highlighting defects which were reported and actioned through daily huddles and logged through Revisto.
- Early Issues identified allowed Jacobs team to get out in front of the problem e.g. Out of Tolerance Openings and service installation not modelled. The Issuing of Weekly Quality Report drove the constant closure of issues identified in the field.
- Issues identified from modular elements were also examined. MGS teams engaged with and visited to QA fabrication supply chain to ensure offsite elements met spatial precision requirements to meet design and onsite needs.
Our team
Project started in Q2 2021 with majority of the works taking place in 2022 and 2023. Works still ongoing but significantly reduce.
Results
- Improved quality of installation over start of project once on-boarding and repeated issues where identified. Metrics shared with client.
- Issues captured in Weekly Quality Report improved quality in build accuracy – clear, open and transparent information that was validated and verified improved dialogue and reduced conflict. One source of truth.
- Early Issues identified allowed us to get out in front of the problem. Rework in model not field – Removing Safety risk from Rework.
- Issue identified in fabrication workshops, reducing damage onsite, delays and reworks, reduced unplanned works, particularly at height, improving safety, cost management program and risk.
- Client RoI of 2000% Cost of Geospatial Management Plan investment.
