Kings Cross As-Built Track Survey, London

Project summary

As part of the £1.2 billion East Coast Upgrade, the project involved a multi-million-pound investment in renewing track, signalling, and overhead line equipment at King’s Cross. The work simplified the layout of the tracks leading to this iconic station, improving reliability by making it easier for trains to arrive and leave. It saw our teams replace the track, signalling, and overhead line equipment on the approach to the station.

The brief

To detail the “as-built” alignment and level of circa 10.5km of tracks and plot results in Acad & MicroStation format drawing files.

The challenges:
Despite appearances in the above image, this was an extremely busy site, with multiple contractors and various plant movements to contend with.

Our work

Using the Amberg GRP1000 on track device associated with our Leica total stations, we detailed the “as-built” alignment and level in line with Network Rail standards and based it on existing survey control.

Our team

We were able to make use of the limited access and supplied multiple teams across a number of weeks.

Results

Results were plotted in both an AutoCAD and MicroStation format along with a CSV file of coordinates. These were then integrated with the client’s own surveys to produce a final as-built record.
