Inspiring the Next Generation of Geospatial Experts
Did you know that 80% of data has a location or ‘geospatial’
element?
Geospatial data already has a significant impact on our
lives, from telling us where our nearest coffee shop is to allowing us to
assess the weather before making plans. As a sector, geospatial is expected to
grow further, yet it’s predicted there will a be significant shortfall in the
number of suitably qualified individuals within the next 10 to 20 years.
Murphy Geospatial in partnership with Newcastle University
has launched Geospatial UK, a website created to broaden awareness and
understanding of geospatial skills and technologies and its applications for
the future.
The website is aimed at KS4 and KS5 students who enjoy
geography, maps, being outdoors or about using technology to understand data.
It includes a range of geospatially themed classroom activities, information
about the wide range of careers in the geospatial sector, including job
descriptions and pay, as well as highlighting opportunities such as work
experience or competitions.
There is also a dedicated page for teachers where you can
find guidance and support on improving your own GIS skills including free
activities to help deliver curriculum-led geospatial lessons. There are also
opportunities for schools to get in touch and book in-school, on-site or
virtual sessions with a geospatial topic.
