Visit The Hugh Lane Gallery this National Heritage Week

National Heritage Week takes place from tomorrow 18th to 26th August. Coordinated by The Heritage Council, the week aims to build awareness and education about our heritage. Each year during the last week of August, national and local community organisations participate by organising events throughout Ireland to preserve and promote our natural, built and cultural heritage.

Murphy Surveys have been honoured to be involved in a large range of prestigious heritage, restoration and conservation projects over the years and one such project is that of the Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane. Charlemont House, the home of the Dublin City Gallery, was commissioned by James Caulfeild (1728-1799), 4th Viscount Charlemont and 1st Earl of Charlemont and built in 1765. Designed by Scottish born architect William Chambers (1723-96) the design for Charlemont House was unique, limestone-clad and set back from the street, framed by curved walls with rustic details. In 1929 the gardens of the house were built upon to accommodate the Gallery. Its founder Hugh Lane held exhibitions there from the early 1900’s and the gallery has grown it’s collection considerably to this day. With critically acclaimed programmes and world-renowned collections, the Gallery plays a very significant cultural role in Ireland.

Our teams initially carried out a terrestrial scan and topographical survey of Parnell Square, and were later commissioned to produce a 3D BIM model of the basement, ground and roof of Charlemont House, incorporating all structural and architectural details. The surveys carried out support the preservation as well as design, redevelopment and facilities management of the building.

The Hugh Lane holds numerous activities including the exhibitions, concerts and children’s workshop – plenty to entertain and inform you during National Heritage Week and beyond! Visit www.hughlane.ie
