About This Project

Murphy Geospatial was requested to carry out a Non-destructive Testing survey on behalf of J. Murphy and sons LTD. The objective of the project was to confirm the location of the beams in an old basement at King’s Cross Bridge to help for the future restoration of the basement for London underground and commercial use.

Survey Requirements

The whole concrete floor slab of the basement, around 350m2, was surveyed in a grid pattern with a high frequency antenna in order to assess the position of the beams.

Survey Specifications

Non-destructive techniques survey allowed us to determine the structural arrangement of the structures surveyed. The modern high tech equipment used offers the ability to detect reinforcing bars, pre- and post-tensioned tendons, beams, metallic or non-metallic objects.

This method  allow us to scan large areas of concrete in a grid pattern and detects object in multiple layers at depth of up to 400mm in dry concrete. A NDT survey minimize the risk of hitting concealed objects when drilling holes. Helps to avoid costly rebar hits and damage and avoid inconveniences and unexpected expenses from service outages.

The area of concern were surveyed at 0.5m spacing in both longitudinal and transversal directions with a 2GHz antenna and referenced with a Leica Total Stations. The recorded data were post-processed in the office for further evaluation and analysis. Results were provided to the client as a CAD drawing and a report.
